Moving Checklist
Six Weeks Before Moving
- Make an inventory of everything to be moved.
- Donate unwanted clothing or household goods to charitable organizations. Obtain receipts showing the items' approximate value for possible tax deductions.
- Select a moving Company
- Collect boxes, cartons and packing materials
Four Weeks Before Moving
- Prepare a list of friends, relatives, business firms and others who should be notified of your move. Be sure to include the DMV, your doctors, household utilities like PG&E and Cable, as well as personal accounts such as Bank or credit card companies and magazine subscriptions
- Decide what to do with house plants. Most moving companies will not transport plants
One Week Before Moving
- Notify the post office that you are moving.
- Notify utility companies to have accounts set up in your name.
- Collect things you definitely want packed together, such as children's toys, and place in separate groups.
- Collect all items that are being cleaned, stored or repaired
- Check and make inventory of all furniture for dents and scratches; notify moving company of your list and compare on final day.
- Dispose of all combustibles and spray cans.
- Review the entire inventory list to make certain that you haven’t overlooked anything
Moving Day
- Plan to spend the entire day at the house
- Hire a babysitter or send the children to a friend’s house for the day
- Tell the packer and/or driver about any fragile items
- Supervise loading and unloading
- Exchange contact information with the driver in case of an emergency
- Ensure all appliances and lights are turned off and or disconnected.
- Once the house is empty, do one last move out cleaning
At Your New Home
- Be available to let the movers in and let them know where you would like certain boxes and furniture placed.
- Check all appliances are in good working order and home is clean
- Check with your new post office for any mail being held and ask for delivery to start.
